We are a young, fast growing, international team of medical researchers with a special interest in Anesthesia. We are designing and conducting clinical trials that will have considerable impact on future medical practice.
Christian C. Apfel, MD, PhD
Dr. Christian Apfel is Associate Professor of Anesthesia and was recruited to the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care in 2006 to build up and lead this fast growing Perioperative Clinical Research Core.
He is a board certified in Anesthesiology and Emergency Medicine in Germany and has a long standing interest in clinical research. Dr. Apfel's expertise in study design and biostatistics lead him to develop and conduct IMPACT – the landmark study on the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2004.

Oliver C. Radke, MD, PhD, DEAA
Oliver is board certified in Anesthesia, Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine and had a 2-year appointment as Visiting Assistant Professor at UCSF. Currently, he is the Director of Orthopedic Anesthesia at the University Hospital of Dresden, Germany.

Katherine Fero
Katherine (Kelly) Fero is a recent Stanford graduate who is working as a Staff Research Associate with Dr. Apfel. Currently she does data collection and analysis, patient follow-ups, and assists with on-going clinical trials.
Paran joined the team in 2009. He completed his undergraduate training in Molecular and Cell Biology at University of California, Berkeley in 2008 and plans to apply to medical school. Currently he does data collection and analysis, patient follow-ups, and assists with on-going clinical trials.

O. Serpil Cakmakkaya, MD
Serpil as a board certified Anesthesiologist from Turkey and specialises in Pediatric Anesthesia. She contributed to numerous papers and presentations and achieved two presentation awards at international meetings.
In 2007, Serpil joined our group as a Visiting Assistant Researcher to further improve her research skills. Besides patient recruitment, her focus lies on data analysis, data management and statistical analysis.

Amit Saxena
Amit completed his undergraduate training in molecular and cell biology at UC Berkeley in 2006 and is currently a second year medical student at UCSF. After completing his first year of medical school, he received a scholarship ("Dean's Summer Fellowship", granted by the School of Medicine Student Reserach Training Program) for a research project on postdural puncture headache with our lab. Amit is primarily involved in literature review, manuscript writing, patient recruitment and data management.

Kerstin Kolodzie, MD
Kerstin has joined us in 2007. Originating from Hamburg, Germany, she is board certified in Anesthesiology and Emergency Medicine and has a clinical commitment at UCSF Medical center. Her main areas of interest include Malignant Hyperthermia, PONV, difficult airway management and blood coagulation. Her responsibilities in our group include patient recruitment, study coordination and manuscript writing and editing.

Serena Shi, MD
Serena completed her undergraduate training in biology and neuroscience at MIT in 1999 and medical school at Vanderbilt University in 2005. She also spent two years as Howard Hughes Medical Research Fellow from 2002-2004 at Stanford University. After two years of residency in plastic surgery at Stanford University, she joined our lab as a clinical research coordinator in March, 2008. Serena is involved in various on-going clinical trials here at the center and works with patient recruitment, data collection/management and manuscript preparation.
