Pulmonary recruitment maneuver reduces post-laparoscopy shoulder pain

Shoulder pain is a frequent symptom after laparoscopic surgery that is often considered to be more severe than the surgical pain itself. It is assumed that the main trigger is remaining carbondioxide that leads to irritation under the diaphragm. However, we have been able to demonstrate that shoulder pain may be reduced with a simple clinical technique consisting of 5 pulmonary recruitment maneuvers in Trendelenburg position after the deflation of the capnoperitoneum.

Who will suffer from Post-Discharge Nausea and Vomiting (PDNV)?

We all have a good idea about how our patients feel after their surgery, because we care for them in the PACU. And very often, patients receive a follow-up call on the next day. However, while most of us have some idea who might not do well postoperatively, there is no prospective survey that tried to predict who will suffer from postdischarge nausea and vomiting (PDNV) and to what extend these symptoms affect their daily living.
